The Provisions of Learning Disability Services Centers

There are many unfortunate people in the world; the disabled, the orphans, the widowed and those afflicted with learning disabilities. Hence, it is important to extend care and support in every way to these groups of community as they deserve a meaningful and quality life too. There are some noble learning disability services and disabled centers that are set up across the world in every nation to cater to the pressing needs of these communities.

Objective

Many of these learning disability services centers have noble objectives. They are set up by volunteers and NGOs to work with those who have learning disabilities in the hope of offering a better quality of life for them.

Every person with learning disability is important; hence, the right support tools and techniques are employed to equip these individuals to get the best in life for themselves as many of these individuals do not write, read or speak. The best communicative approach is to be undertaken to encourage these individuals to communicate the way they are most comfortable with. Learning disability services centers hinge on that objective.

Trained Staff

In order that learning disability services providers offer the best support to the needy community, there must be trained and qualified staff to work with the individuals with learning disabilities. Support staff can be volunteers or paid depending on the altruist values of the workers.

They must be qualified in a relevant field like psychology, medicine or education before being trained on working with individuals having learning disabilities.

Partnerships

Besides having workers in the learning disability services centers, there must also be the important partnerships with other groups of authorities and society to ensure success of the centers. These include local governing authorities, deaf and dumb associations, commissioning bodies, merchants and corporations.

Every partnership is relevant with a huge contribution potential to the success of any learning disability services provider or center. Each partner can contribute in providing high quality and relevant tailored solutions according to its resources and expertise in supporting individuals with learning disability.

Scope of Support

Learning disabilities services centers offer a wide scope of support ranging from a couple of hours in the individual's home to 24 hours care in any registered care home. Support can be in the form of finances, emotional, communication, spending quality time together, personal care, healthcare, domestic tasks and mental wellbeing.

Learning disabilities services also include working and liaising with families, caregivers or parties involved in decision making. Practical support is usually advocated to impact the individuals with learning disability.

Speech pathology is involved with helping those that have language associated ailments similar to communication complications, fluency conditions plus more. On the other hand, along with a growing maturing society as well as state laws that now necessitate treatment for kids with talking setbacks, this career is anticipated to advance a fantastic 19 percent in the forthcoming years. This suggests plenty of opportunities for people who ready themselves to do this occupation by going to masters programs in speech pathology and receiving the required certifications.

Work locations As you may have already been in a position to guess, speech therapists are generally found in healthcare facilities such as treatment centers, hospitals and nursing care facilities. In spite of this, nearly half of these individuals actually work in educational facilities just like primary and secondary schools. If you possess the endurance and genuinely take pleasure in working together with children, then this may be the right profession choice for you. One affair to remember though is that the normal salary for language pathologists operating in schools tends to be less than those who work in healthcare locations. Needless to say, both locations have their advantages and disadvantages that should be mindfully assessed before choosing one. Speech therapy job duties Working together with patients can be hugely arduous as you would have to special tailor an individualized program of care for them. Therefore, features such as patience and terrific awareness of detail are important to be successful in this field. Listed below are the various occupation duties which speech therapists perform fairly often:

• Evaluate and diagnose affected individuals based on their requirements
• Design a therapy plan that can help to improve conversation
• Work along with medical doctors as well as other social personnel
• Operate with instructors in school environments
• Make use of equipment to help with the particular course of treatment
• Connect with members of the family to give comments
• Employ existing speech pathology research techniques

This is certainly simply a quick taste of tasks that one aiming to follow an occupation in this particular domain should expect. Nevertheless, these duties may change depending on the needs of the client are and if you work in a medical center or a classroom. The way it appears, there are actually much more occupation openings than there are speech pathologists as the need is simply excessive. If you are looking to get an exceptional vocation or even just want to transform your present career then make sure you look into courses intended for speech and language pathology.

Life Gets Interesting When we Fail.

Did this get your attention? It did mine when I saw it in the subject of an email from Ted Talks. It got my attention for a couple of reasons I think:

First, because I don't normally associate "failure" with "interesting" ...and especially not when that failure is connected to my life! Most of us would call failure a "set back", an embarrassing loss, a sign we aren't meant to do it, depleting, or disheartening - wouldn't we? That's the tempting first reaction to feelings of failure. It is a fear response.

After that first "yeah right" reaction to the juxtaposition of the words, "life' "fail" "interesting, my second reaction was CURIOUSITY - I felt an inner daring to peek out from my first reaction and to look at this a little closer.

My third reaction was "Boy is that right on!"

These three responses probably occurred in about a third of a second as I came to land on the third response and that "something potent here" inner feeling that I've learned to follow.

Oddly enough, I deal daily in failure everyday. You could say I specialize in fear of failure. I don't mean that I am a failure -- although I've experienced plenty of what most would call failure. In truth, I've rarely seen my failures as, well, "failures" - and so my intrigue with this one line that came into my email box today.

In my unusual vocation as a spiritual teacher and guide, I work with people every day who come to me searching for help, seeking healing, clarity, and renewed direction ...Renewed direction from what?

...Most would say they are seeking solutions to situations and circumstances in life that are making them feel stuck, fearful or failed: stuck in a destructive lifestyle; fearful of remaining lost, depressed, and going around in circles; wounded from a sense of failed love in marriage, parenting, or inability for self-acceptance.

Here are two of the three words: failed life. When we feel we are lost or not living in a way that brings joy, peace, passion and meaningful purpose, we often start to become depressed. Why? We know we are missing something our heart longs for... but we don't know how to get it (or are too afraid of what we'd have to give up to get there - if we got there! We feel we are failing at our life in some way.In short, we are feeling a (perhaps unconscious) fear of failure -- even though we might very well cloak it in different language.

No one I know calls me and says "gosh I'm failing my life and isn't this just so interesting?

Yet that is exactly true! When we feel most afraid, stuck, and confused -- like we are missing the boat in our life -- is exactly when we are being invited to meet up with a new opening and growth in our life... if we but knew how to set about finding and following this trail of an inner wisdom we may doubt we have...

But listen to this: The completing words to the quote at the top of the article:

"Life gets interesting when we fail ...because it means we have just surpassed ourselves!"

It means we have surpassed ourselves! It means we have already stepped past the old self in some manner (realized or not) and are in the midst of a newly emerging self! Now that is very very interesting! It's, in fact, just what we have been seeking and asking for through our feelings of stuck, fear, fail - a new lease on life!

Stuck, Fear, Failure are interesting words because they herald the emergent path of transformation, self-growth, breakthrough, insight and revelation! Those are very exciting words and very adventurous places to walk through and to experience! This emergent call of change, are the places that bring bounce back to the step, sparkle into the eye, laughter bubbling up from the heart, passionate hope for the adventure of living. Who doesn't want that?

CALL TO ACTION:

1) As suggested in a recent Ted Talk by scientist Regina Dugan, ask yourself this question: "What would you try if you knew that you could not fail?

2) Really take time with this intriguing question. Take time to see and to daydream about what it would feel like to achieve that thing you would do in life if you knew you could not fail. What would it look like? What would you feel like? Spend a few days letting that daydreamy feeling seep in.

3) Then look at some area in your life where you feel stuck, fearful, or that you have failed. Get a piece of paper out and draw a starting point in the middle of a the paper and then draw a spiral circling out to the edge of the paper - as many turns as you like. (Don't read ahead

4) Now choose a place to mark 8 more circles all along the spiral at various places you choose (they can be any place you decide to put them).

5) Now add 21 more little X marks along the spiral (again anywhere you feel drawn to put them),

6) Next find one circle or X that calls your attention right now (not the first 2 or the last 2 along the spiral, but any others are OK to select).

7) Now think of one challenging situation in your current life right now (some place where you feel a sense of confusion, angst, doubt or fear) Got it?

8) Go back to that place you selected a moment ago (in #6) and let that mark stand for this current situation in your life.

9) Take a moment to connect all the circles and then to connect all the X's -- and simply notice the pattern against the spiral. Then appreciate that each circle and each X stands for a life crossroad or significant place of challenge and/or growth. Notice how some repeat along the spiral; notice any patterns that stand out for you (even if only an "odd" memory or thought).

10) Reflect back on the quote and this article and look over your spiral of life once more. Look at the journey from the outer edge (representing birth or new or external) as it circles in closer and closer to the center of the spiral (representing your "authentic self, centered self, inner truth". See if you can appreciate each of the circles and X's that lead you to your center; how each difficulty was a passage leading you closer to your Self. You might play with the circles standing for the change/outcome/growth and the X's the hurtles that lead you there. (there are many creative ways to play with this drawing, please feel free to explore them).

11) Finally, simply sit with this concept and your paper - see if you can See inside your heart that: Everything that has happened in your life - everything up to this exact moment -- was necessary to bring you to this precise place in your life (it had to, or you wouldn't be in this exact place!) This exact place - this moment in your life that all other moments have brought you to -- is indeed very interesting. It is very interesting because (now as I hope you realize) this moment's situation, whatever it is, is a sign. If you are feeling fear, stuck, failure or uncertainty, it is the sign that you have already started to surpass your former self - that you are making, or about to make, another turn inward on your spiral of life.

Stuck. Fear. Failure. Each is a signpost that your life has become too small for your soul; that your own life is seeking to grow and to become more embodied and authentically you.

Moments of seeming failure are signs that you are on your true Way: where stuck transforms into curiosity; failure transforms into creative insight and breakthrough; and fear transforms into self-love and humility.

Bon Voyage!

Teacher Tips on Developing Your Blind Student's Overall Classroom Organizational Skills

Organizational skills are of the utmost importance in a blind student's-braille reader's educational setting and include: student/teacher organization, management of materials, timely preparation of class lessons in transcribed braille, and even interlining of Nemeth braille math workbooks so non-braille reading staff can offer assistance when needed. Your blind student will have an easier time maintaining class pace in an organized and well prepped class setting. It is essential to instruct your staff and student on simple preparation tips, modifications and techniques that will make the school day an efficient and effective learning experience.

1. It is always easier to teach good organizational skills right from the start (Pre-school-Kindergarten) opposed to teaching them in later school years. Teach your student to be prepared and organized by being a good role model.

2. Your braille student will most likely require additional space to store numerous materials, braille books and miscellaneous adapted materials. Here is a suggestion that worked for my students!
Provide (2) student desks to allow for good storage and organization of materials.
Desk #1 This is your Student's desk for classroom work and storage of frequently used literary braille materials. Literary materials to be stored in this desk may include: braille/auditory dictionary, Perkin's eraser, slate & stylus, marking items (crayons, color pencils with braille labeling for easy identification), and literary braille code reference guidebook. Store currently used literary braille books in volume order underneath the student work desk/literary desk.

Desk #2: This desk is for storage of Nemeth work folders, materials associated with math (braille ruler, auditory calculator, abacus, analog braille clock, multiplication and division braille charts and miscellaneous math materials). The student may also use a Nemeth reference guide sheet or book while in the process of learning their Nemeth symbols which should be readily available in this desk. Store currently used Nemeth braille books in volume order underneath the math desk in a crate or box for easy access. It is helpful to the blind student to have this extra desk and enough table/storage area next to them to avoid constant lifting of heavy materials such as the Perkin's Brailler. Therefore, store the Perkin's Brailler on top of this desk to the left of the student so that it is readily available.

3. Keep updated literary and Nemeth braille reference sheets which includes all the literary and Nemeth code the student has learned up to date. Both reference sheets should be updated during braille lessons to include newly learned braille code for reference. Offer a small reference guidebook once the literary code is completed by the student. A list of basic rules that govern the braille code should also be available in braille as reference for the student. This reference guide list is an especially useful reference tool for the more complicated Nemeth code.

4. Educational braille books not currently being used should be stored in a convenient location in the classroom; review the location with the student and encourage them to access their braille books on an independent basis or shadow them until the student becomes fully independent in this process. Volumes should be removed once completed or no longer required and sent home for reference.

5. Look into having your student's Nemeth workbooks fully or partially transcribed with print above the braille so that non-braille reading staff can assist the student with instruction when needed.

6. Store smaller items such as a pencil, crayons, small ruler, Perkin's braille eraser and miscellaneous items in a container for easy access.

7. Provide a braille calendar in the early educational years for use in group activities and include your blind student in calendar group activities. Have a small braille calendar available for student reference during group table-top activities. It is essential that the student is taught how to actually read a braille calendar in an organized and efficient manner. Students should also have a calendar available in the home setting. These calendars are readily available at major companies that manufacture adaptive products for blind individuals.

8. Use non-slip material under the Perkins Brailler to reduce sliding on the desk-top.

9. Use canvas or cloth back-packs on the back of the student's chair for organization and storage of daily work folders and assignments. Classroom work and homework assignment folders should be clearly marked in braille for easy identification, organization and accessibility. Having braille folders easily accessible to the student will allow them independence in organization and placement of homework assignments and classroom work. Chair back packs are now commercially available or easily made.

10. Have sight words readily available as transcribed braille flashcards. Provide braille flashcards for use in both school and home settings. Sight words can be easily reviewed in braille lessons and updated as needed. Keep cards protected in plastic index card boxes.

11. Mark crayons, color pencils and paint box colors with braille labels so that they are easily identified. Keep miscellaneous writing utensils in the student's desk for easy access.

12. Take the time to develop the skill of "marking" with your student in the early years. Developing the skill of marking with a pencil or with a tactual mark including circling, checking or an X is a very valuable skill when your student begins to take teacher-made multiple choice tests. This basic skill develops fine motor and organized tactual scanning skills which is also an essential skill for future tactual graphic reading and mapping skills. Tactual marking can be included into simple games such as Tic-Tac-Toe.

13. Start a "homework braille" folder, a "to be transcribed" folder and "to be brailled folder" to help maintain good organization and flow of the student's classroom work. The student should be taught to be responsible for their homework folder and completing the work in it. Provide your braille transcriber an adequate time frame to get materials formatted and embossed in a timely manner.

14. Look at your student's class seating. Does your student pay better attention up front by the teacher?

15. Include your student in class teacher "helper" assignments such as: bringing attendance record to office staff, bringing class lunch orders to appropriate cafeteria staff, handing out papers, pledge and other class activities. This gives your student the opportunity to develop their Orientation & Mobility skills, memory mapping of the school and socialization skills. Take advantage of opportunities to develop appropriate socialization skills (i.e. social greetings/pleasantries, development of receptive and expressive speech and closing of conversation).

16. Backpack organization skills are a priority. Having an organized backpack with marked braille folders and developing a consistent routine of placing braille work and folders will help your student become an organized, efficient and active participant in the home and classroom setting.

17. Use braille name tags for personal cubicles, especially if print tags are used for the sighted students. Look for end cubicles or cubbies which are easily accessible and identifiable to the blind student. Braille tags for cubicles and cubbies are especially useful in pre-school and offer a great opportunity for the student to be exposed to braille.

18. Provide braille room labels at students hand level for: classroom, bathroom, nurse's office, art room, music room, Science room, physical education room, cafeteria and main office for identification until the student fully learns their route and important room locations. These braille tags may be discontinued if no longer required.

19. With the vast amount of new technology and resources (Braille Note, Franklin Language Master, audio book player etc.) it is recommended to keep all manuals organized in a folder for easy reference. Braille Note users should be encouraged to explore braille manuals for familiarity and future reference as appropriate.

20. Please be sure to display your student's braille stories, work and art work alongside their sighted peers. Display your student's work at hand level so that peers and staff can explore their work. Attach a print copy so that others may also read your students work/stories and enjoy his/her creativity.

21. Have your student outline their homework assignments in braille. This braille homework outline will serve as a great braille reference reminder and offers a review of homework expectations.

The Dangers of Ignoring Reading Difficulty in Children

Many children struggle a little when they start to learn to read but time and good teaching helps them to overcome those initial difficulties. However, if by half way through his first year, your child can't recognize around one hundred common, short words then he may be experiencing difficulties. Don't disregard the signs as the dangers of ignoring reading difficulty in children can be traumatic and far reaching.

Embarrassment and Frustration

Reading difficulty in children brings out all sorts of emotions; embarrassment because they look foolish in front of their class mates and frustration because no matter how hard they try, they just can't get the words out and reading aloud in class becomes a trial.

School children being what they are, children with reading problems will be teased and even bullied by their class mates, and may end up in trouble by trying to fight the bullies.

Teachers and parents of these children see an apparently intelligent child who doesn't seem to be trying to learn to read, so they are labelled "lazy" or "careless" or "stupid". This adds to the child's frustrations because he is trying so hard, but he just can't live up to adults' expectations.

Anxiety and Anger

Children with reading problems can become anxious and withdrawn if nobody recognizes that they have a genuine difficulty. Because these children expect to fail, they will become anxious when faced with a new situation which involves participation in school work.

Reading difficulties can also lead to an unstable temperament. Teachers and parents think the child isn't trying, class mates think he's stupid and he can do nothing about it, so he becomes angry and starts to lash out at those closest to him such as parents or siblings.

Self-Esteem

A child who is unable to read properly will have difficulties with any other school work which requires reading. As he gets older there will be more and more subjects which require reading skills, such as history and geography to name but two.

A child with normal reading abilities will develop his own self-image during his school years and in general, it will be a positive one leading him to believe that all things are possible and that the world is his oyster.

Children with reading problems will begin to feel inferior to their school mates and siblings who can read fluently. Constant failure will lead to feelings of low self-esteem and a reluctance to make an effort because doing so doesn't make any difference. Their view of the future will be a dim one and they won't expect to succeed in life.

The Consequences

The dangers of ignoring reading difficulty in children can result in any or all of the above emotions for the children, and many of them fail to complete school because it seems so pointless, and of those who do graduate from high school very few go on to further education.

If you suspect that your child is having difficulty reading, do seek help while he's young and don't let him develop into a frustrated and angry adult

Good Pharmacovigilance Practice - Inspection And Audits - Webinar By Globalcompliancepanel

Overview: This webinar will describe how to conduct a thorough drug safety and pharmacovigilance audit, including compliance with applicable worldwide laws, regulations and guidance. In addition, attendees will learn how to compare the company's pharmacovigilance operations to applicable best practices.

The course will cover all aspects of drug safety and pharmacovigilance compliance including the collection, assessment and reporting of adverse event cases, the analysis of cases to detect signals, the management of signals and safety concerns, and the development, execution and monitoring of risk management plans.

Why should you attend: During high profile drug withdrawals of the past, most of the focus of the press and legal community was on the actual adverse event and the people who were injured. Today the attention seems to be on the documentation of how and when companies learned of the increased frequency of adverse events and what they did about it.

Meanwhile, international regulatory guidances on drug safety monitoring are increasing. With ICH E2E and E2C, CIOMS VI and VII, and the FDA Amendment Act, companies may need to audit their pre-marketing and post-marketing safety monitoring practices to ensure they are following Good Pharmacovigilance Practices.

A pharmacovigilance audit begins with a strong methodology that captures the key requirements of all the applicable regulatory bodies. It compares a company's practices to an "ideal" process map that includes strategy, infrastructure, tools, execution and evaluation.

Areas Covered in the Session:

Regulatory Background: matrix of safety regulations; postmarketing safety reporting: CFR; International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH); ICH topic codes and reports; Council of International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS); Eudravigilance; Clinical Trials Directive; Volume 9a

The Pharmacovigilance Audit: overview of the pharmacovigilance audit; typical pharmacovigilance current process model; best practice approach to enhancing process model; achieving best practices through the pharmacovigilance assessment; value derived; scope; company sources of information to be examined; PV checklist; audit report table of contents; limited audit

Practical Tips: Importance of QPPV in Europe; need for oversight of the pharmacovigilance system; ensuring information on adverse events is accessible; suitability of people; requirements for SOPs; processing of ICSRs; electronic reporting; Periodic Safety Update Reports (PSURs); signal detection practical tips; quality assurance

Who Will Benefit:

Making E Learning Course Design Work

Effective, successful e learning is the aim of every course designer. Yet ask most learners and these two words are not the ones that will immediately come into their minds when describing their experience of taking an e learning course.

While not all e learning is dreadful, too many examples are; and, as most learners will tell you, these bad examples are boring. Usually deathly boring. So what can we do with our e learning course design to make sure it works and is successful for both learners and the organisations they work for?

Most e learning course designers want to make their e learning interesting and engaging and many look to authoring tool interactions and multimedia to help them achieve this.

On the face of it, this seems like a good solution. After all, having learners do something every few screens of the course surely has to be better than just having them read content, doesn't it? Initially, yes. But the problem with this approach is that learners soon become bored. For example, dragging and dropping an object across the screen seems fun and interesting the first couple of times you do it, but once you've done it twenty times, it doesn't seem that clever anymore.

In fact, it doesn't take learners long to realise that the use of multimedia and interactions is really just a way of covering up a deeper problem - too much focus on content.

When course designers create classroom training, they have numerous options available to them. It is relatively easy to create imaginative classroom exercises and activities when you know you will have a group of people who can engage and interact with each other.

As an instructional designer, faced with a blank computer screen, the challenge is far greater. How do you make looking at this screen interesting and engaging for your learners without spending pots of money and taking months of development time?

Chances are you will take the current conventional route and fill that screen with content and then add something like a picture, graphic or interaction to make it more attractive and interesting.

If you decide to take this approach (and most designers do) then it's likely you will quickly see the need to keep lots of screens of content well-organised and structured. Before you know it, you are quickly sucked into a content-centric approach to development.

And once you go down this route you are well on the way to creating the online equivalent of a glorified book or a high end PowerPoint presentation. While both end results could look very professional and attractive, they are unlikely to make for effective learning.

Instead, e learning course designers would do much better to focus their attention away from highly structured content with added multimedia and interactions and focus instead on creating meaningful scenario-driven approaches to learning that are both memorable and motivating to learners.

How to Teach a Deaf Kid

The moment a child takes birth, happens to be the most wonderful moment for the parents. However, if the child is born with some physical problems like deaf or dumb, it becomes the saddest thing for the parents, because every parent wishes their child to be perfectly fine. However, there are ways to teach the deaf children, which also helps to improve their condition:

The foremost teaching for the deaf kids should be teaching them sign language. Easy signs can be taught as soon as a deaf baby starts talking non-verbally with the family members. Most experts put stress on the point that deaf kids should have a basic perceptive of sign language before they reach nursery school or even playgroup.Improve a deaf kid's use of sign language until they are totally capable. Increasing their information base will be highly needy upon their ease of sign language, because all other educational subjects will be corresponded in this manner.Teach deaf kids in the minimum-limiting atmosphere possible. About a few years back, more than 80 percent of all deaf kids were educated in special schools. From that time, government programs have been put into practice to put together deaf kids into the public school system, having enough money them to contact with hearing kids as much as possible.Put the names of the deaf children down into a mainstream or full addition set of courses that allow them to work together with children who can hear during non-educational activities, such as physical education and dine periods.Inform the parents of deaf kids about all of the alternatives offered to teach their kids. Put stress on the point that a mainstream or full inclusion curriculum may be more of a knowledge challenge at first, but amalgamations into a hearing populace train the students for life. In fact, certain chances, like scholarships and fiscal grants, may be obtainable.Make use of latest technologies when you teach a deaf kid. Teach the kids to make use of computers and to find the way with the help of Internet for further study. By keeping deaf kids well-versed about hi-tech advances, you can widen up their chance base.

Speechtree Aac App Helping Children With Autism Learn And Communicate

SpeechTree AAC App is the new augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and learning program that is creating tremendous buzz throughout the special needs community. SpeechTree recently concluded a promotion with Smart Apps for Kids attracting over 4,840 entries for a chance to win the new AAC app. Additionally, numerous comments from parents and professionals indicate the enormous interest for an AAC app that can simplify the AAC learning process for beginning and emerging communicators including individuals with autism who are non-verbal, and others with limited language and communication skills.

A lot of people have begun to purchase both iPads and AAC apps - recognizing its potential, but seemingly lacking the needed guidance to begin teaching.

SpeechTree AAC Section

"I found many parents purchasing AAC apps but not understanding how to introduce or use them. For many beginning communicators at early stages in their development, AAC can be a very challenging process to learn. Many have unique learning needs that require lots of practice, encouragement, support, and instruction. That is how I realized the great potential to create an evidence-based app that could simplify this process and allow parents and educators to actively participate and monitor progress and areas that require further growth." Angela Desideri M.S.,CCC-SLP, internationally recognized speech language pathologist, AAC expert, and co-creator of SpeechTree.

SpeechTree's learning section includes 20 different lessons that incorporate ABA, evidence based principles, and comprehensive data collection. The lessons follow a systematic process that make it easy to monitor progress and continue working on areas that require further growth. Once AAC users have mastered a lesson, they can begin expanding language to 2 -3 words phrases, sentences and beyond in the SpeechTree AAC section.

Take for example Samantha. She is an 8 year non verbal girl with Autism. Her father, James, has been actively working with her using an iPad and SpeechTree AAC app.

SpeechTree Learning & Data Section

"SpeechTree has done wonders for Samantha's communication skills," says James. "The data has been so important because it has allowed us to focus more on Samantha's strengths and try to expand language using these strengths. SpeechTree gave us a place to start with the AAC process."

"My passion is to teach parents evidence-based strategies to use apps in the home environment. I am currently working on several projects to accomplish this next step," says Angela. The creation of SpeechTree application is only the first step in her plans to provide the needed guidance for parents and teachers to begin and expand upon the teaching process.

Does Your Child Have a Learning Disability?

While every parent wants to believe the best about their children, sometimes it becomes difficult to ignore the issues they are having in school. When kids struggle with their schoolwork and are significantly behind the rest of their class in important subjects like reading and math there is a possibility that they might have an education learning disability. This type of problem is not necessarily related to disorders like ADD or autism although children with these disorders may have difficulty learning in their classes. A learning disability is a separate type of problem that can be diagnosed by a professional if you are concerned that this might be the case. Unfortunately many children who struggle in school are written off as being unmotivated or having behavior problems when that is not the case.

If you find that your child is having trouble learning basic skills in spite of trying their best and simply cannot grasp certain things in their classes then you can get help for them. After being diagnosed with an education learning disability, they will be able to get special care for their problems in school. They may get moved to a different class or maybe get tutoring that caters toward their problem to help them learn at their own pace and do their best without being left behind by all the other students. It is important that their teacher understands the situation with the child and can give them a little leeway when it comes to keeping up with the rest of the class.

Having a learning disability does not necessarily mean the child will not succeed in school; they simply need some extra help to get through the subjects they struggle with the most. Although school can be especially difficult for them to handle, making sure they succeed is the best way to help your child overcome their disability. You should always believe in your child's abilities and want they can achieve but also take into account that they might have special circumstances that need attention in order to keep up with everyone else. Your support is an important part of their overall success in school and ultimately in life.

Orton-Gillingham - approach method to teach people with disabilities learning

The Orton-Gillingham method is sequential, structured, multisensory approach cumulative and cognitive learning of languages. Three methods used by the method of Orton-Gillingham training includes Visual, auditory and kinesthetic. These methods are used to teach people who have difficulties with reading, spelling and writing.

How these learning approaches to get the name of Orton-Gillingham?

The approach was developed by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Dr Gillingham. Samuel was an American physician and focuses on the study of learning disabilities. He became famous with his work on the causes and methods of treatment of dyslexia.

While he worked as a pathologist in Massachusetts, he began working with patients with damage to the brain. Passing the time with patients, he studied much on their general behaviour, their weaknesses and the difficulties encountered by them during their life. Studies, he came to know that they have great difficulty with the language learning and reading. It is this fact which led to study more on why some apparently intact neurological functioning children had similar problems with language processing and playback. Through the study, he came to the conclusion that people with brain damage have failed to establish appropriate cerebral organization to support the association of Visual words with their spoken forms.

Later, he began to work with the psychologist Anna Gillingham. It helped Samuel Orton to design and publish the materials useful for people suffering from brain damage. The materials contains the 44 sounds from the English alphabet and morphemes, including prefixes and suffixes, and some common rules that must be followed with some models and types of syllable. This method of teaching helped students with difficulty in learning languages to apply decoding skills to memorize words that are not phonetic. Owner's manual when it is combined with the concept of Multisensory Teaching Orton came to known as the Orton-Gillingham method to read the instructions.

Today, the Orton-Gillingham method is used as an effective remedy for sufferers of the disorder called dyslexia of language processing. What makes the popular teaching method is the way in which simple phonetic concepts to more complex and the syllable patterns are presented in a multi-sensory way. It helps learners to make progress and be successful with its full potential.

What are the different methods of Orton-Gillingham?

Method based on the language - in this approach, it is a special technique to study and learn languages. This approach helps to understand human language, the mechanisms involved in learning and the language learning process.

Multisensory - it is an action-oriented approach. Here learning is based on audio, Visual and kinesthetic elements. The student can learn the spelling as well as reading.

Structured, sequential, Cumulative - it is a systematic approach to the learning of languages. Using these method students learned to read and write by mixing the sounds in words. The instructors address the vocabulary, structure of the sentence, composition and reading of similarly structured and cumulative.

Cognitive - this method allows students to learn the language and its history. As well as learning, they learn to apply their knowledge to achieve reading and writing skills.

What to Expect From a Welding Program

A welder is someone who uses special equipment to weld together metal or plastic materials into parts or objects. Welders are also responsible for making sure that welding machines are working properly. Going to college can help you to develop basic and advanced skills that would help you to be a better welder in the future. Having those skills could also help you to land a more advanced position, although getting a welding degree will not guarantee that you will get a job. A welding program will provide you with essential knowledge and hands-on-training that would benefit you were you to become a welder in the near future.

Preparing for a Specialized Certification

Within a welding program, you can learn skills that help you to gain specialized types of certification, such as a pipe welding certification. Many colleges offer specialized welding programs, such as welding programs for people who want to get a pipe welding certification to be eligible to work in the petroleum industry. Some schools require that students get more generalized degrees before they go into specialized programs. Some programs require that students get certain math and reading scores on the TABE standardized test or have practical experience in the welding industry. Once enrolled in these specialized programs, students often have to complete a certain number of hours on specialized equipment, such as pipe welders, to be able to become certified to work in specialized welding industries.

Starting Your Training

For students who have limited experience in welding but have an interest in becoming a welder, many schools have basic welding programs that allow them to gain the basic skills they need. Having these basic skills would help you if you enter the manufacturing industry because you would likely need to spend less time learning welding during an apprenticeship. A welding program will allow you to gain a wide range of welding knowledge and receive specialized instruction from a skilled teacher who can give you personalized attention. If you decide to learn welding in a college program, you can get hands-on instruction with different types of welding, especially contrasting forms of arc welding. If you were to learn welding while working on the job, it would probably take you longer to learn different types of welding techniques than it would if you took different welding classes within a structured program.

Many basic welding programs offer associates degrees in welding. Students often have to go to school for around two years, or more if needed, to receive a basic welding degree. To receive a more advanced certification in a specific type of welding, students often have to complete a certain number of classroom hours. Welding certifications are often built into a welding program, and students have to take more basic classes to be able to move on to classes that teach more advanced welding techniques. Some programs require that students take hands-on tests to prove that they are able to operate specialized welding machinery. Students should expect to spend long hours working with different types of welding equipment within a welding program.

Common Learning Disabilities

There are a lot of students who either have or develop different learning disabilities throughout their educational career. This could mean they have dealt with it since elementary or grade school, or they didn't have it until they went to college. Either way, it can still make getting an education difficult and can affect the grades they get. However, a lot of these disorders and disabilities are very common and although some may prove to be more of a challenge than others, they are still possible to work with and accommodate.

One of the most common types is attention deficit disorder, ADD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD. This condition normally affects the attention span of students and can make it difficult to concentrate during lectures, tests, and assignments. There are ways to treat this medically with a prescription from a doctor. However, many students find ways to work through their disorder without medication. Students with ADD or ADHD should take frequent breaks while studying or working on an assignment, and find a way to relieve built up stress or tension. Find a place where you can study in peace and won't be tempted or distracted easily. This may mean instead of studying in your room, study at the kitchen table, or go to the library. Talk to your teacher or school about if they have any policies to accommodate those with ADD or ADHD.

Dyslexia is more common than some people think. Dyslexia is a condition that results in lower reading levels and sometimes lower writing levels. The condition is a result of the way the brain's processes and translates written words and languages. People who suffer from this disorder can't simply cure themselves of it, but can reduce its affects through tutoring and taking remedial classes. Students may need to take extra time on tests, quizzes, and certain assignments. You can check with your college's student disability office for more information about different accommodations and options you have.

Sensory Processing Disorder, SPD, can prove to be quite difficult, but not impossible to work with. People with this disorder find they have troubles processing one or more of the five senses. The information that is picked up by a certain sensory process like hearing may be processed in a way that doesn't make sense to the brain which causes confusion and stress. It is still possible to work around this condition. You can talk to your doctor about how to treat, help, or reduce the issues that may be associated with this disorder. Schools and colleges are supposed to offer aid to students with learning disabilities so they can still get an education.

There are a lot of different types of learning disorders and disabilities. However, many people who suffer from them have found away to either work with or around the problem so they can get an education and a degree. There are so many different ways that people learn and process information, which is why there are different ways to study, take notes, and even attend classes. Some students choose to attend traditional classes and colleges so they can either get more help with their disabilities or because it is the best way for them to learn. Others opt to take their classes online because they can spend more time on their assignments. Everyone can get an education, no matter what disorder or condition they may have.

Get Your Kids to Eat More Healthily at a London Cooking School

Every parent wants the best for their child, but in a world of fast food and sugary snacks it can be difficult to get kids to eat healthily. New research suggests that there is a simple solution - getting them to cook.

A recent study by City University London has shown cooking classes for children and adults encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables. There is also evidence that teaching children to cook helps them identify and like a wider range of foods. Being open to new flavours means children are more willing to eat a varied diet, which we all know is the best kind.

While food technology lessons at school certainly help, a more fun and exciting way to get kids into cooking is to take them to a specialist cookery school in the heart of London. Many of these schools have classes specifically for kids, often held during the school holidays. The classes are run by professional chefs and the meals go far beyond rock cakes and pizza. Children can easily be taught to cook healthy, delicious foods that are full of flavour. Examples of dishes include 'seared salmon with braised vegetables' or 'pear and chocolate crumble'.

Kids will have seen this sort of food on TV, but the children's menus in a lot of restaurants are decidedly poor. Sausage, chips and beans just doesn't cut it, and this is the sort of thing often served in school as well. Jamie Oliver is well known for trying to introduce healthier school dinners. If children and their parents can learn to cook healthy, exciting meals at home, there is less need to have school dinners in the first place. Eating leftovers from the previous evening's well-cooked meal with some fruit can make for a healthy, inexpensive and tasty packed lunch.

Cooking workshops can also help kids make friends, and in interacting with the chefs they are meeting new adults. It is well known that learning outside the classroom can be more effective, simply because it is more memorable and more engaging than a day at school. Another great thing about these activities is that the kids can try to recreate the dishes at home, showing their parents how it's done!

Simply being in a professional quality kitchen can be exciting. Most kids will never have seen the large, stainless steel surfaces and huge ovens, and there is nothing like watching a chef chop vegetables with such finesse. The whole experience can inspire children to want to cook more at home and improve their culinary skills.

If you're wondering how to keep your children occupied during the next holidays, look for a cookery class. Not only does it give them something meaningful and fun to do, it can lead them to make healthier choices in the future.

L'atelier des Chefs offer a huge range of cooking classes for children and adults alike. Their London kitchens are state-of-the-art, and they have professional chefs to teach you the tricks of the trade. Kids Can Cook! lessons last an hour, during which kids produce great quality dishes such as 'chicken and mushroom en croute' and 'smoked paprika chicken with chorizo'. Click here

Education to Special Children in General Schools

Special schools that have been set up in the past, for them provisions have been made for integrated education. Children studying in these schools who are afflicted with hearing impairment, visual impairment and locomotors disabilities are asked to follow a specialized curriculum that can meet their specific educational needs. At the same time efforts are being made to put it in line with the general education curriculum, so that in future, those children who are migrated to mainstream schools are able to adapt well.

Over the time, there has been change in the school of thought and growing awareness with which people have realized that instead of working outside the mainstream classrooms, the special schools can work with, and provide support to, regular schools. The education of disabled people in India has been recognized as an integral part of the educational system; therefore, the policies and programs adopted in recent years have been in accordance with this belief. However, more developmental changes are required to make special and general education come closer.

Inclusive Schools Can Bring Difference

Special schools and educators are like guiding lights that have helped disabled persons to break out into the world and embark on the path of self-realization and self-expression. With the change in time, it is hoped that inclusive schools will trigger off the process that will help disabled persons merge into mainstream life and empower them to be integral part of it.

Inclusive education must be sighted as a rational step towards evolution of special education for persons with disability. On the contrary, special schools and special educators should try to strengthen the inclusion efforts by helping mainstream schools in addressing the special needs and challenges posed by the presence of disabled children. This could be the most positive development that will bridge gap between special children and others. This will be to a win -win situation for all.

Some the known organizations of India - National Association for the Blind, Action for Ability Development and Inclusion (AADI, formerly Spastic Society of Northern India), Vidya Sagar and few others have reorganized their set ups and are aggressively working for the same. They have realigned themselves with mainstream schools, helping them with inputs like training of teachers, provision of learning material, curriculum adaptation, support in the classroom, evaluation process, development of teaching aids, etc. This emerging partnership appears to be heading in the right direction and promises a great deal of changes.
